Technology and Medical Ethics


The question of medical ethics when using life-sustaining technologies is examined. Steve Heilig is Director of Public Health and Education at the San Francisco Medical Society. Also the Editor of the Cambridge Quarterly for Healthcare Ethics, he talks about the ethical questions involved in discontinuing the use of life-sustaining technologies. In addition, the question of terminal patients choosing to end their own lives is discussed.

Moira also speaks with Pierre Ludington, San Francisco Health Commissioner and former Executive Director of the American Association of Physicians for Human Rights. He talks about the problems of choosing among technologies in the interest of public health and the special needs of the AIDS community in San Francisco.
