Jazz trombonist and arranger Glen Miller led the most popular swing band of the late 1930s and early 1940s; their hit "In the Mood" is still well known today. In 1942 he enlisted in the army, where he formed a large orchestra to entertain the troups in Europe; in 1944 he died in a plane crash over the English Channel at the age of 40. His life is chronicled in Hollywood's fashion in "The Glenn Miller Story", starring Jimmy Stewart. (b. 3/1/04 Clarinda, IA d. 12/16/44 England)
