What is the BLUES?

Much of jazz is rooted in the blues, which started as field hollers' and as a folk music, especially in Mississippi and Texas, and today jazz educators like Dr. Taylor often intorduce their students to the art of jazz improvisation through the blues. What was the role of blues in the development of jazz, and what is the continuing influence of the blues form on jazz in the contemporary era?
