Binary Form: The Key to Music in the Classic Era

We will be getting into some of the main symphonic forms tonight...This thing that we've been talking about for two weeks, "binary form" is the key to it. Practically every structure, in the Classic era, that is every instrumental structure, is in one way or the other either based on or is derived from binary form, or makes use of binary form. Its the key.

Ternary form, Dr. Broyles stated, is based upon pairs of binary structures, and explained how this form relates to the development of the scherzo in the Romantic period.
