L. Stuart Vance

Carl Malamud interviews L. Stuart Vance, a veteran in the war of bringing TCP/IP protocol stacks into alien territory. Vance discusses the concept of encapsulation and explains how his company uses encapsulation as a technique for building DECnet tunnels through the Internet and how they build TCP/IP protocol stacks on VMS platforms.

Stuart Vance is well known for some of the most creative ways of using protocols that may appear at first glance to be somewhat limited. In this interview, Vance discusses how to run IP over E-mail, his efforts to build large-scale networks in a few hours for INTEROP, and how all this relates to our ability to make toast from remote locations.
