Peter Deutsch

Carl Malamud interviews Peter Deutsch, President of Bunyip Information Services and the first man known to break the speed of sound while talking. Deutsch was one of the co-developers of Archie, a service that scans anonymous FTP sites and maintains distributed databases. Archie allows users on the Internet to locate copies of files they are looking for.

Peter Deutsch talks about his philosophy for services and compares Archie to X.500. Deutsch has been instrumental in the IETF working group looking to salvage what remains of the whois service and deploy a white pages service called whois++. Deutsch discusses the current status of whois++ and what kind of standards body it takes to design and deploy new things on the Internet.
