Diamonds in Their Souls
Modern South Africa was shaped by the discovery of diamonds little more
than a century ago. Industrialist Cecil Rhodes established the first
diamond mine and used native labor to extract the precious stones from
the soil. Journalist Stefan Kanfer traces the history of diamonds,
the tightly controlled DeBeers diamond cartel, and the relationship
between diamonds and Apartheid, on this Common Ground.
