People Power
In recent years there's been an explosion in the number of nongovernmental
organizations, or NGOs, such as Save the Children and Oxfam. These groups
have often stepped in where governments fail and sometimes gain enough
influence to change government policy. In this program, Common Ground
looks at what's behind this upsurge in citizen participation. Mary Gray
Davidson speaks with Jessica Tuchman Mathews, senior fellow of the Council
on Foreign Relations; Frank Judd, member of the House of Lords and former
director of Oxfam UK; and Thierry Lemaresquier, director of the NGO
Programme of UNDP.
