Jean-Bertrand Aristide

On June 28, 1994, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, President of the Republic of Haiti, spoke at a National Press Club luncheon. President Aristide described the current situation of his country and set several objectives for the future, urging the world to help Haiti move "from misery to poverty with dignity." With the restoration of democracy, Aristide said, improvements in living standards, agricultural productivity, and technology will follow and Haitians will no longer risk their lives to become refugees. He suggested that journalists can make a difference in bringing the needed changes to Haiti.
