Mstislav Rostropovich

On June 15, 1994, Mstislav Rostropovich spoke at a National Press Club luncheon. The retiring music director of the National Symphony Orchestra shared his view of current conditions in Russia based on his personal experience before his exile and during a recent visit. The descriptions of his departure in 1974 and his return after the fall of communism were particularly emotional. Maestro Rostropovich has made it clear that he intends to remain a global figure, and even in his "retirement" has arranged a busy schedule with many trips and performances.
