Cardinal Joseph Bernardin


On May 26, 1994, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, head of the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago, spoke at a National Press Club Luncheon. Bernardin is a strong advocate of comprehensive health care for all Americans but also a firm supporter of the Catholic position on reproduction. In his speech Bernardin stated his case for passing a health reform package in Congress that does not include coverage for abortions.
