It is comprised of members of Hall's Concert Jazz band, the prestigious large ensemble. The Quintet has won the award for Best Combo in its class at the annual Berklee High School Jazz Festival for the past several years. It has also won the Nest Jazz Instrumental Group in the Down Beat annual Student Music Awards. Former members have won awards for the Best Original Composition/ Extended Arrangement, Best Original Composition/ Song, and Best Instrumentalist. The Quintet has always demonstrated a strong commitment to community service by performing at such locations as the Salvation Army, The Big Climb (fund-raiser for Leukemia), and the annual Festival of Trees at the Wadsworth Athenaeum, to name a few. Recently, the Quintet participated in a fundraising Playathon at Hall High School to benefit the Connecticut chapter of the Ronald McDonald House. This twelve-hour gala of music raised $2600 in donations. In addition to charitable performances, the Quintet plays at public events and private functions. It has been invited to play at the International Association of Jazz Educators conference for the past few years. These conferences were attended by outstanding musicians, such as Horace Silver, Joe Henderson, T.S. Monk, Jr., and Joshua Redman. The Quintet, along with the Concert Jazz Band, will soon be releasing yet another compact disc. The Quintet recorded two original compositions and one standard for this CD, which is currently being produced. It is an exciting opportunity, an educational experience, and a testament to the excellent musical quality of the Quintet and the big band. The Hall High Jazz Quintet has been invited, along with the Hall High Concert Jazz Band, to perform at the White House on December 5th, just prior to the Congressional Ball. A White House holiday planning committee recently selected Hall's groups for this honor after reviewing their many accomplishments and listening to some of their music on the 1993 compact disc.
