On this segment of HarperAudio!,

T.S. Eliot reads his classic poem "The Waste Land." Born in St. Louis,
Missouri, and educated at Harvard, Eliot lived most of his life in England.
In 1948 he was awarded the Nobel Prize. The poem has five sections and
has been split into four sound files:

     "The Burial of the Dead"
     "A Game of Chess"
"The Fire Sermon" and "Death By Water"
     "What the Thunder Said"

The Wasteland is considered to be Eliot's masterpiece, rich in
symbolic, literary, and historical references as the poem explores
the struggles of a soul in despair.

On this segment of HarperAudio!,

American poet Robert Frost (1874-1963) reads "The Road Not Taken," "The
Pasture," "Mowing," "Birches," "After Apple-Picking," and "The Tuft of
Flowers." Set in rural New England, Frost's poetry uses ordinary events
and objects from his life in New England as metaphors for complex ideas
and feelings. "The Road Not Taken" presents the classic choice of a moment
and a lifetime, while "The Tuft of Flowers" explores the meaning of common
human experiences. Frost, who was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1924, 1931,
1937, and 1943, described a poem as "a momentary stay against confusion."
These straightforward but intense readings were made in 1956 at Frost's
home.

On this segment of HarperAudio!, we hear Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961)
giving his acceptance speech for the Nobel Prize for Literature,
recorded by a Havana, Cuba radio station in 1954. It is followed by a
speech Hemingway gave to introduce a production of his play "The Fifth
Column." The play is set in Madrid during the Spanish Civil War, where
Hemingway served as a war correspondent. In both these excerpts, Hemingway
displays in speech the economy of style and almost staccato structure that
made him one of the most influential writers of the 20th Century.

Nobel Prize-winning author Ernest Hemingway describes the plot of a novel
set "In Harry's Bar in Venice." Taped with a transistorized pocket recorder
sometime in the late 1950s, this speech displays Hemingway's aggressive,
and in this recording somewhat inebriated, personality and style. His
terse sentences and economy of description have made him one of the most
important and most widely imitated American writers of the 20th Century.

Actress Maureen Stapleton reads Shirley Jackson's timeless short story,
"The Lottery." The story takes place in a small town not unlike that
inhabited by Jackson herself, who taught at Bennington, Vermont. The
strength of this story lies in Jackson's ability to expose the unquestioned
existence of evil in everyday life. When Jackson was asked about the
meaning of this story, which was published in the 1940s, she replied,
"Why, it's about the Jews, of course." In reality, the story goes much
deeper than that to the root of human nature itself.

On this segment of HarperAudio!,

We present excerpts from Shakespeare's playful, stylish "Much Ado About
Nothing," which brings together Beatrice and Benedick, one of the most
famous duos ever invented for the stage. This 1963 performance features
Rex Harrison and Rachel Roberts who bring new life to this sophisticated
comedy of manners on the subject of marriage and marital bondage.

Part 1
In these opening scenes, Benedick and Claudio return home from the
battlefield and are greeted by Beatrice, a young lady of the court, and
Hero, the Duke's daughter.

Part 2
In these scenes, Beatrice offers her views on marriage and men in
general. In the meantime, the evil Don John is hatching a plot to slander
Hero's reputation.

Part 3
In these scenes, Hero, the daughter of the Duke, pretends to be
dead so that those who spread lies about her may be exposed. At the same
time, Beatrice and Benedick have each been convinced that the other is in
love.

Part 4
In these final scenes, the lovely lady Hero is exonerated and
reveals that she is alive, dashing the plot of her villainous uncle,
Don John. Beatrice and Benedick profess their love for each other and
are united in holy, but waspish, wedlock.

On this segment of HarperAudio!,

Author Ernest Hemingway reads a gripping segment from an untitled "work in
progress." Hemingway, who started his career as a newspaperman and foreign
correspondent, often set his stories in exotic locations. He won the
Pulitzer Prize in 1952 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. This
fragment, taped with a wire recorder or transistorized pocket recorder
sometime in the late 1950s, is one of the few examples of Hemingway reading
his own work. The story typifies Hemingway's fascination with violence and
its aftermath and shows the masterful story-telling technique that has made
him one of the 20th century's most widely imitated writers.

On this segment of HarperAudio!,

Actor Charlton Heston reads "The Snows of Kilimanjaro," a short story
by Ernest Hemingway originally published in 1938. The story takes place
in Africa, which Hemingway knew and enjoyed visiting as a big game hunter.
As the scene opens, Harry, a writer, is stranded with his wife and their
safari party in the African bush. Their truck has broken down and Harry's
leg has developed gangrene which grows progressively worse.

Throughout the story, Harry recalls scenes from his past. The scenes
Hemingway describes clearly stem from his own life; he spent summers as a
child in the wilderness of upper Michigan, was wounded and decorated for
bravery during the First World War, and lived in Paris between the wars.
The story's theme of a writer struggling with his talent resembles
Hemingway's own struggles and self-questionings.

Charlton Heston won an Academy Award in 1959 for his performance in the
title role of "Ben-Hur." The story is presented in four segments and has
been edited for length.

ordinary suburbanites with complex interior lives. By providing minutely

In this story, a man visits an eye doctor and meets an old flame. This

On this segment of HarperAudio!,

Actor Anthony Quayle reads Edgar Allan Poe's "The Purloined Letter."
This short story, written in 1845, features the brainy amateur detective
C. Auguste Dupin. Dupin is called in by G., a prefect of police, to help
locate a letter that has been stolen from a lady of the court by a D., an
unscrupulous cabinet minister. Dupin uses his intellect to retrieve the
letter, and while explaining his reasoning also expounds on his theories
of intelligence, physiognomy, and mathematics. While the story's central
idea of a compromising letter seems quaint these days, Poe loses most
modern readers entirely with his final line -- a classical allusion, in
French no less. It translates as "If such a sinister design isn't worthy
of Atreus, it is worthy of Thyestes," two brothers of Greek tragedy.

Edgar Allan Poe was born in 1809 and died in 1849 of disease related to
alcoholism. In 1836 he married his 13- year-old cousin, Virginia Clemm,
whose death 11 years later inspired the poem Annabel Lee. Poe's career
ranged from Richmond, Virginia, where he edited the Southern Literary
Messenger, to New York, where he ran The Broadway Journal. He is buried
in Baltimore, Maryland.

Content: Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar"

On this segment of HarperAudio!,

We present excerpts from William Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" starring
Sir Ralph Richardson and Anthony Quayle and directed by Howard Sackler.

In Part 1, Caesar has been warned by a soothsayer to beware the ides of
March (March 15). In this scene, Caesar's wife begs him not to go to
the Capitol because she has had ominous dreams and fears for his life.
Brutus, Caesar's friend and a conspirator against him, appears and
convinces Caesar to go to the Capitol in spite of the portents.

In Part 2, Caesar, a great general, is petitioned by several citizens to
show clemency to one of his enemies. He declines, pompously speaking of
himself in the third person. The group of conspirators then proceeds to
stab him. With his dying breath he gasps, "Et tu, Brute? ("And you,
Brutus?") Thus falls Caesar." The conspirators exult, and Shakespeare
inserts a self-referential joke as Cassius says, "How many ages hence
shall this our lofty scene be acted over in states unborn and accents
yet unknown!"

In Part 3, Brutus presents a rational argument in favor of Caesar's
assassination at the beginning of the funeral. His logical but prosaic
way of speaking convinces the attending Romans to accept his political
reasons for the crime -- but only temporarily.

In part 4, we hear the end of the funeral scene. After Brutus finishes
his eulogy, Marc Antony gets up to speak. In contrast with Brutus's
rational argument, Marc Antony appeals solely to emotion, rousing the
crowd to pity Caesar and manipulating them by sheer force of feelings.
Again, Shakespeare inserts an ironic touch; Marc Antony disingenuously
claims "I am no orator, as Brutus is," even though he has just defeated
Brutus in a battle of words.

Actor Ossie Davis reads "Simple on Indian Blood," one of the "Simple" stories
of Langston Hughes. Famous today for his poetry, Hughes also wrote protest
columns. Jesse B. Semple, Hughes's quintessential Harlem resident, first
appeared in the Chicago Defender newspaper. Semple's character became popular
nationwide and over his lifetime Hughes produced five books and a Broadway
play based on the "Simple Stories." Often set as dialogues, the humorous
stories feature an overly reasonable, conciliatory narrator who comes into
conflict with the outspoken and intransigent Jesse B. Semple.

Anne Sexton reads her own poetry -- "Her Kind," "The Ambition Bird,"
"Ringing the Bells," "Music Swims Back to Me," and "The Truth the Dead

writing poetry on the advice of her therapist in 1957, and won the
Pulitzer Prize for her book of poems, "Live or Die." Haunted by mental
illness and personal torment, Sexton's poems speak openly of a dark and

On this segment of HarperAudio!,

We present excerpts from Lorraine Hansberry's play "To Be Young, Gifted
and Black." In her writing, Hansberry drew heavily on her own experiences
growing up on the south side of Chicago. In 1959 Hansberry's first play,
"A Raisin in the Sun," won the Best Play Award from the New York Drama
Critic's Circle. Only 29 years old at the time, Hansberry was the youngest
American, and the first black playwright, to win this prestigious award.

"To Be Young, Gifted, And Black" was created from Hansberry's plays, poems,
and writings by her husband Robert Nemiroff. The entire play represents 20
episodes in Hansberry's life. This production stars James Earl Jones, Barbara
Baxley, and Claudia McNeil, and was directed by Gigi Cascio and Robert
Nemiroff.

On this segment of HarperAudio!,

"A Toast to Harlem," one of the "Simple" stories by Langston Hughes, read
by actor Ossie Davis. Originally written as a newspaper column, this story
revels in the Harlem of the 1940s, describing the neighborhood's joys and
frustrations. Like the other "Simple Stories," this tale stars "Jesse B.
Semple," a homespun philosopher, who engages in a dialogue with a mild-
mannered narrator. Hughes himself was an influential figure in the Harlem
Renaissance, a literary and artistic movement that also produced Countee
Cullen, Richard Wright, and Zora Neale Hurston.

"With Mercy for the Greedy," "The Starry Night," "Letter Written on a

poet Anne Sexton. Sexton spent much of her life battling mental illness,
and much of her poetry refers openly to her experiences in psychiatric
hospitals. Her intricate play of rhyming sounds and repetitive rhythms
forms a structure for work that focuses primarily on deep introspection
and unhappiness.

On this segment of HarperAudio!,

John Updike reads from "Pigeon Feathers," a book of his short stories.
In this story, "Fanning's Island," he discusses how Polynesia became
populated and speculates on the origin of cultural relics found on a
remote island. Adopting the voice of a long-ago native warrior, he
tells a poignant tale of men isolated on the island, their numbers
gradually dwindling.

Updike's other published works include the novels "Rabbit Run," "Couples,"
and "The Witches of Eastwick." This recording was made in 1969.

Content: Charles Dickens', "A Tale of Two Cities"

On this segment of HarperAudio!,

James Mason reads Charles Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities." The two cities
are London and Paris just before the French Revolution. Dickens used the
traditional Victorian novel as a medium for social protest, describing the
oppression of the lower classes and the justifiable unrest that led to the
excesses of the French Revolution.

Dickens, a product of the working classes himself, empathized with the
oppressed workers and children of his day. All of his novels are social
commentaries, and "A Tale of Two Cities" describes the tribulations suffered
by the French lower classes under the reign of Louis XVI. Dickens makes the
French Revolution seem inevitable, and paints sympathetic pictures of those
who plotted it. The precipitating event of the Revolution occurred on July
14, 1789, when a mob stormed the hated Bastille prison and liberated the
political prisoners it contained.

This novel, first published in 1859, is set during the French Revolution
and includes some of the authors' best-known characters. Madame Defarge,
wife of a wine-shop keeper, hates the aristocracy. She knits constantly,
encoding the names of aristocrats and enemies of the revolution into her
work. Dickens takes this detail from Thomas Carlyle's book on the French
Revolution, which described women knitting as they watched the guillotine
do its work.

Anthony Burgess reads from his cult classic, "A Clockwork Orange." This
novel consists of a series of episodes in the life of Alex, a young tough
who lives in a nightmare future of violence and sadism. Burgess created a
special language he calls "Nadsat," a kind of anglo-russian fusion. Words
like "stary," Russian for "old" and "horrorshow," from the Russian
"khoroscho," meaning "good" pepper the descriptions Alex gives of his
antisocial activities.

On this segment of HarperAudio!,

William Faulkner reads an excerpt from his novel "A Fable." Faulkner was
the scion of an old Mississippi family, and drew from his personal and
family history for his work. In this book, however, Faulkner departs
from his usual use of the Mississippi milieu and uses for his plot a
religious allegory set in France during World War I. The novel won
the Pulitzer Prize in 1954.

On this segment of HarperAudio!,

"Feet Live Their Own Life" by Langston Hughes is read by Ossie Davis. In
this "Simple" story, the character of Jesse B. Semple discusses the subject
of feet -- how you can tell a man's life by his feet, and of the many
things his feet have done for him. (This includes kicking in a white man's
window during the 1943 riots in Harlem.) As with all of Hughes's "Simple"
stories, this piece is cast as a dialogue between the activist Jesse B.
Semple and a more conservative narrator.

On this segment of HarperAudio!,

The sonnets of William Shakespeare are read by British actor Sir John
Gielgud. The sonnet form enjoyed great popularity in England in the late
16th century, and Shakespeare in writing this sequence was influenced by
other writers of his day. However, they display an intensely personal
feeling and were clearly shaped by the author's own experience. In this
recording, incidental music is provided by the Elizabethan Consort of Viols
and the Taylor Consort of Recorders, conducted by Leslie Pearson.
