Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven: Beethoven's Third Symphony Explained

Moving forward into the early 19th century, the transition into the Romantic period was underway. "Let's see what Beethoven was doing with sonata form at about this time," Dr. Broyles said, "One thing I can tell you is that he was expanding it." Music got bigger, pieces became longer.

According to Dr. Broyles, Beethoven's Third Symphony (the "Eroica") was one of the most significant developments in classic music. He recounts the political events surrounding the composition and some interesting erasures on the first page of the manuscript of this important work.
