Carl Malamud interviews John Romkey, author of numerous
protocol stacks and recently named to the cast of "IAB: The Next
Generation." In this wide-ranging interview, Romkey talks about
the role of security in the Internet, the PGP versus PEM controversy,
and export control policies that leave RSA algorithms patented in
the US but available for anonymous FTP in Finland. Romkey also
discusses the role of SNMP in ToasterNet and we learn why his
garage is full of burnt Eggos and how he incurred the wrath of
the Waffle Union.

In this week's Ask Dr. SNMP, Dr. Jeff Case lets loose on a
Journalist from Jupiter (aren't they all) and his inane inquiries
about the future of SNMP Version 3.

On this week's "Geek of the Week,"

Carl Malamud interviews Cliff Lynch, one of the most thoughtful
participants in the race to move libraries and publishers onto
electronic publishing platforms. Lynch received his Ph.D. in database
systems and is currently the Director of Library Automation for the
University of California. Lynch's most amazing accomplishment is the
amount of travel he puts in, far outstripping anybody this interviewer
has ever met in his ability to attend any and all events where a consensus
needs to be forged. His tireless activities have been instrumental
in bringing the networking and library communities together.

In this interview, Cliff Lynch discusses online publishing, looking
at the issue of SGML as a markup language and examining the question of
presentation integrity versus the desire for revisable form documents.
Lynch also discusses the Z39.50 protocol, the scaling of very large
databases, the democratization of publishing, and the role of the
Coalition for Networked Information.

On this week's "Geek of the Week,"

Carl Malamud interviews Peter Deutsch, President of Bunyip
Information Services and the first man known to break the speed
of sound while talking. Deutsch was one of the co-developers of
Archie, a service that scans anonymous FTP sites and maintains
distributed databases. Archie allows users on the Internet to
locate copies of files they are looking for.

Peter Deutsch talks about his philosophy for services and
compares Archie to X.500. Deutsch has been instrumental in the
IETF working group looking to salvage what remains of the whois

Geek of the Week: Rob Blokzijl

Release: July 1, 1993
Content: Rob Blokzijl

On this week's "Geek of the Week,"

Carl Malamud interviews Rob Blokzijl, network manager for
NIKHEF, the Dutch Insitute of High Energy Physics. NIKHEF has
been one of the key sites for networking in Europe and Bockzijl
has been the force behind that presence. During the darkest years
of OSI hysteria, NIKHEF helped the lead the move to install and
operate real networks around Europe. NIKHEF, geographically
and spiritually colocated with CWI, the mathematics institute,
has helped make Kruislaan 409 in Amsterdam one of the key hubs
in European networking.

In this interview, we learn about the birth of RIPE, the
IP users group for Europe. We also hear about what it was like
to try and put networks together in an era of massive centrally
planned information policies and functionally obese networking
protocols.

On this week's "Geek of the Week,"

Carl Malamud interviews L. Stuart Vance, a veteran in the
war of bringing TCP/IP protocol stacks into alien territory.
Vance discusses the concept of encapsulation and explains how
his company uses encapsulation as a technique for building
DECnet tunnels through the Internet and how they build TCP/IP
protocol stacks on VMS platforms.

Stuart Vance is well known for some of the most creative
ways of using protocols that may appear at first glance to
be somewhat limited. In this interview, Vance discusses
how to run IP over E-mail, his efforts to build large-scale
networks in a few hours for INTEROP, and how all this relates
to our ability to make toast from remote locations.

Carl Malamud interviews Steve Kille, perhaps the most
articulate and thoughtful of the OSI fanatics. Kille makes
a persuasive case for protocols like X.400, X.500, and the
OSI presentation layer. Kille, a former computer scientist
at University College London, brings his unique hands-on
perspective implementing OSI and related protocols to his
current position as the head of the ISODE Consortium. ISODE
is considered by most experts in the field to be the leading

Tim O'Reilly has an unusual background for a publishing magnate. Working
as a Unix consultant, O'Reilly & Associates developed a special relationship
with the arcane UUCP protocols, expertise that led to a set of two pamphlets
describing how to manage, set up, and use UUCP and Usenet. The original two
Nutshell Guides grew into a fairly extensive set of documentation covering the
X Window System, Unix, Languages, and recently a variety of Internet topics.

Carl Malamud interviews O'Reilly about how commerce can run on the Internet,
looking at on-line enterprises like the Global Network Navigator as early
examples of what to do (and not do) when doing business in a networked world.

Service, including O'Reilly & Associates, Sun Microsystems, and Interop

Internet Multicasting Service is provided by UUNET Technologies and by
